Marine Consultant
Jaap Steenbergen is a Marine Consultant based in our Tholen office.
After graduating as MAROF (Maritime Officer covering both nautical and engineering disciplines) at the Higher Nautical College at Terschelling, The Netherlands, Jaap sailed as deck officer for one of the world’s largest chemical tanker companies. In between his assignments at sea he served as ship operator and in the company’s Marine & Safety department as incident investigator.
After some years at sea, he came ashore in 2008 in a SHEQ position for a large marine projects organisation in The Netherlands. In this role he was involved in Offshore Renewable Energy projects, in particular the construction of offshore windfarms.
After a side step in marine simulation technology, he joined a well-known Dutch consultancy firm in 2010 to become a marine surveyor.
As an all-round surveyor Jaap attended to numerous claims involving a wide variety of cargoes, as well as marine pollution cases. His focus and specialty remained, however, with liquid cargo matters.
Eventually, he joined management in 2016 and later supervised the firm’s multiple Dutch offices, while simultaneously remaining active in the field. He has prepared reports and testimony as an Expert Witness in Europe and the United States.
Jaap remained in this position until 2023 when he joined the Minton, Treharne & Davies Holland B.V. office in Tholen, The Netherlands in the role of Marine Consultant.
