Overview

This three day course is aimed at those involved in the investigation of a significant accident, incident or failure e.g. Insurance claims, industry requirements, legal disputes, etc. It is designed to provide delegates with an understanding of the wide range of scientific techniques and strategies available when conducting a forensic level investigation into the cause of an accident, incident or failure.

The course will be accredited by the CII for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development.

The aim is to provide an understanding of common failure mechanisms, the forensic engineering techniques and strategies used to identify them, together with guidance on the instigation and management of a forensic investigation. There will be hands-on workshops and laboratory demonstrations, although delegates are not expected to have scientific training. The course will include the following areas of interest:

  • Introduction to Root Cause & Failure Analysis
  • Principles of Forensic Level Investigation
  • Specification, Design, Defects and Defective Parts
  • Metallurgical/Chemical Laboratory Techniques
  • Corrosion
  • Structure and Component Failure
  • Non-destructive Testing
  • Fire & Explosion Investigation
  • Complex Components – Common Failures and Investigation Techniques
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • Welding
  • Environmental Pollution and Contamination
  • Bio-corrosion and other Microbial activities
  • Fatigue and Fatigue Life
  • Composite Materials

Topics/Investigation techniques discussed will include review and observation of the following:

  • Tensile, Bending and Hardness Testing
  • Impact Testing (Room Temperature and Sub Zero)
  • Crack Testing including Crack Tip Opening Displacement
  • Fatigue Testing
  • Microstructural Inspection
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy
  • Dye Penetrant Examination
  • X Ray Inspection
  • Atomic Analysis
  • Thermal Analysis
  • Spectral Analysis
